Baylor’s Track And Field
Baylor's track and field is the most famous sports program of the Baylor’s university, creating 466 All-Americans under the 42-year permanent status of chief coach (instructor) Clyde Hart. The most remarkable even of this Baylor‘s track and field program is its men's 4x400 relay team, which has sent teams to the NCAA finals in every year from the past 27 years and generated three Olympic gold medalists: Michael Johnson, Jeremy Wariner and Darold Williamson. Baylor grads added to their account one more gold in the 400 meter dash at three successive Olympics (Johnson in '96 and '00, then Wariner in '04). In 2005, Clyde Hart was promoted as the Director of Baylor’s Track & Field, and Todd Harbour was made the head coach of Baylor's track and field team and cross county squads.
The Baylor’s track and field team opened up the 2010 season at the Texas A&M Invitational, marking school record performances by experienced Chris Gowell in the men's 1,000 meters (2:22.38) and the new Skylar White in the women's shot put (46-8). Gowell asserted his second school-record in his career, also holding the indoor 800-meter record. White broke her own shot put record that she set in a preseason meet in December.
Baylor’s track and field had two temporary required scores at the Texas A&M Invitational one with Tiffany Townsend accomplishing the standard in the 60-meter dash in 7.36 on her way to triumph in the event. The 4x400-meter relay for men also dragged the event and met interim standards in 3:08.50. Gowell is also provisionally qualified in the 800 meters with a time of 1:48.87, a mark he achieved in the Bears' lone December meet.
For the 2010 season the Baylor’s track and field team returned 15 All-Americans, 11 school record holders, and 100 years of training experience. Baylor’s men initiated the season positioned 11, while the women are positioned 16th by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Along with the yearly goals of competing for a Big 12 championship and a position among the best at the NCAA Championships, the 2010 Baylor’s track and field team also features possibly the most experienced team in program history, in both the coaching staff and the squad.
